EARTH HOUR 2009
8:30 “ 9:30pm, Saturday 28 March
Bold, simple and accessible, Earth Hour 2009 has one major aim: to show
governments, individuals and businesses that it is possible to take
action on global warming. The world can no longer wait and the first
step is as easy as turning off a light.
Created in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour began as a city™s way of
showing its support for taking action on climate change. In 2008, more
than 50 million people in 370 cities in 35 countries turned off their
lights for Earth Hour.
In what will be the world™s largest community event, Earth Hour 2009
is set to involve one billion people around the globe, in more than
1,000 cities, turning off lights as a message to world leaders prior to
the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The message is clear -
that we need a commitment to actions that will reduce greenhouse gas
emissions for the benefit of the planet.
It is extremely important for young people to get involved in Earth
Hour. Young people are the ones who will have to deal with climate
change in the future as a result of the decisions made today.
