SYDNEY— This December, six young volunteers will travel to three Indigenous
communities in West Arnhem Land as part of a new program run by Youth Challenge
Australia in partnership with the West Arnhem Shire Council.
The overarching objective of this partnership is to provide a fun and engaging
school holiday program for Indigenous youth in remote communities in the West
Arnhem Land region. The partnership also aims to promote increased engagement
between Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous persons to improve awareness
and cultural understanding between youth in Australia.
An Australian-based, non-profit, non-government organisation, YCA recruits and
trains volunteers to support community development projects in Indigenous
Australia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Mexico, India, and Vanuatu.
From the 12th December 2009 to the 29th January 2010, YCA volunteers will work
with West Arnhem Shire Council staff to coordinate and youth ,sport and
recreation activities for school children and youth during the school holidays
in the communities of Maningrida, Minjilang and Warruwi.
Maningrida is an Indigenous community in the heart of the Arnhem Land region of
Australia's Northern Territory. Situated on the coast of the Northern Territory
it is 500 km east of Darwin and 300 km north east of Jabiru. The Warruwi
community is on the southern tip of South Goulburn Island located in Auray Bay
off the northern Arnhem Land coast in the Indian Ocean. Minjilang is the largest
community on Croker Island, an Aboriginal island community located 230 kilometres
north east of Darwin. The Croker Island group are the most northerly inhabited
part of the Northern Territory and is about one hour’s flight from Darwin.
